Pericles, Prince of Tyre is Shakespeare’s first tragicomedy, and was written and had its first performance in 1608 at the Globe Theatre by Shakespeare and the King’s Men. It is a reworking of the ancient tale of Apollonius of Tyre. The Greek original on which this story is thought to be based probably dates from the 3rd century AD.
It is the story of a prince who must face great dangers on the high seas to avoid the wrath of evil King Antiochus. He is shipwrecked and loses everything but regains his armour, and through his skill in jousting wins the hand of Thaisa, a beautiful princess who bears him a daughter, Marina. He loses both wife and daughter, thinking them dead, but after fourteen years regains them one by one in scenes that are some of the most beautiful in Shakespeare’s canon. In the end, his losses are restored, and he finds happiness.
